The beginning of our lifelong elopement story.

When my partner Andy and I started thinking about getting married on vacation, we were overwhelmed. The world is full of incredible places and choosing just one location to celebrate the “big day” can seem impossible. Tropical beach? An isolated mountain? A vibrant city? The options are endless and we can’t decide.

Then Andy came up with a brilliant idea:

What if we just choose one place first…and then continue choosing new places to “get married” throughout our lives?

The idea is simple yet exciting. We don’t just have a wedding celebration of lifejust the two of us, sometimes with our families. We’ll pack our wedding attire, have our own ceremony, and find unique accommodations. What makes this dream possible is discovery home exchangea hospitality service that opens the door to a world of unique and affordable travel.

First Ceremony: San Diego Wedding

Our first true “resort wedding” was held in San Diego, a destination that was both exotic and accessible. We took our girls with us, eager to see the West Coast for the first time. We stayed in a beautiful HomeExchange house and our hosts thought of everything for us: special gifts and a large bouquet of flowers that I carried during the ceremony.

Wedding Ceremony-Cohabitation Elopement

The ceremony was held on the rocky shores of California and was absolutely beautiful – our girls had never seen a beach like this before. But ironically, their favorite moments weren’t spectacular waves or wishes. Their favorites are simple, authentic activities at home: cleaning the swimming pool and eating fresh oranges picked straight from the trees.
A perfect reminder that adventure, especially for children, is often hidden in the tiniest moments.

Second Ritual: Live Like a Hawaiian Local

After the success in San Diego, the lure of the Hawaiian Islands was irresistible. Thanks to HomeExchange we were able to go there several times which wouldn’t have been possible in our budget if we had to pay for the hotel.

We celebrated our wedding on several beaches in Hawaii, capturing those precious moments for ourselves at dawn and dusk. every time it’s like one Renew our vowsa way to deepen our love and attachment to a form of travel that prioritizes experience over cost.

Third Ceremony: Retreat with Parents in Costa Rica

Our recent “vacation” added a new dimension to our tradition: involving my parents in the adventure. This time we found one Stunning Home Exchange Houses in the Mountains of Costa Rica. The house felt like a secluded retreat and our host was very helpful, giving us great advice on sightseeing and making sure my parents, who have limited mobility, were comfortable and had their own time.

One day, while my parents were visiting the estate with our lovely hosts, Andy and I slipped away. We walked alone to a remote waterfall and the surroundings were picture postcard perfect. It was a moment both romantic and intense, proving that even when traveling with generations, there is always room for private and deeply personal moments.
