In Belgium, smoking will be banned on the terrace of coffee or restaurants in 2027. This measure is divided: good news or freedom?
14 years ago, Belgium expelled cigarettes from restaurants. Soon, the ban will also apply to outdoor terraces. Starting from January 1, 2027, the government has indeed decided to absolutely ban the consumption of tobacco and e-cigarettes in public places.
8% of deaths caused by cigarettes
Belgian society is moving in the right direction: the number of smokers is declining and the number of young people is getting fewer and fewer. According to the latest Sciensano Health survey, 17.6% of the population smokes today, compared with 19.4% in 2018.
But the danger is still very real: Tobacco is still one of the deadliest products. Sciensano in Belgium, “he killed nearly two people per hour, accounting for about 8% of the year’s deaths.” Even the desire to stop is there – over 1/3 of everyday smokers last year – unleashing yourself is a real challenge. Especially due to classic tobacco products, e-cigarettes are gaining ground, especially among young people. Often appear in alternative ways, sometimes proven to be a portal for smoking…
More tobacco on the terrace?
As a result, the government has entered a higher stage in the fight against this addiction: from 1 January 2027, cigarettes and cigarettes will be banned on public and nearby terraces, and public smokers will be banned.
Protecting the health of smokers is also a key decision for non-smokers. Because one hour spent on a smoky terrace is enough to be exposed to passive smoking…there are real health risks such as respiratory infections.
What do you think?
Because it was made public, not everyone accepted this measure…and what do you think?
